Our technique to strengthen young plants
Treating young plants with spore inoculum is a relatively recent technique which helps to reinforce the mycorrhization process in the most delicate stage of the life of the plant. It also encourages the recovery of plants that have lost their mycorrhization because of the stress of planting, or other causes of stress.
There are various techniques to prepare the spore inoculum, including the most traditional which is to prepare a mix of sterile water to which spore dust, obtained from dried truffles broken up with a blender, is added.
Starting from that base, Truffleland has developed its own version of spore inoculum in which the sterile water is replaced by limestone sand (previously sterilised) with a high active chalk content, an essential ingredient for the development of mycelium.
The truffles from which the spores are obtained are also not dried (unlike in the classic preparation), so as to avoid the dehydration of the spores themselves. This leaves them more prone to rooting and germination.
Truffleland,
embracing research and innovation
The spore inoculum is prepared in 20 kilo buckets, each of which is enough to treat 40 trees in the first or second year of life. For more developed plants a larger dose must be given, because of the more developed root system.
Truffleland’s spore inoculum is thus a “wet inoculum”. This makes it especially effective, but, on the other hand, it also makes it easily perishable, so the timespan between preparation and application is very brief.
That is why the spore inoculum at Truffleland is prepared when an order is received and has to be administered in the timeframe and in the way which is communicated when the order is placed.
The best time for administering the spore inoculum is spring, since it works on the new root tips which are developed by the plant in this season.
Application can, however, also take place in autumn, especially for the spore inoculum of the summer truffle, immediately prior to tilling the soil as this enables the spore to be buried and thus conserved until the following spring, when it will already find itself in contact with the roots.
